Brooks Takes Reserve Championship in New Mexico

07/30/2008 - Merrick Brooks, 14 of Eastland, recently competed at the Wrangler Junior High National Finals Rodeo in Gallup, New Mexico. Brooks was among some 800 contestants competing in 11 events and one of 109 contestants in the bull riding event.



Merrick faced bull riding competitors from Australia, Canada and the United States.
During the first two rounds Merrick posted scores of 69 and 70 which placed him second and advanced on to the short go round. There he scored 74 points to bring his total to 213 points. This total awarded Merrick the Reserve National Championship title in bull riding.

Merrick assisted the Texas Boys team to the National Championship which occurred June 28 through July 5 in Gallup. The rodeo event will be aired on the RFD-TV channel October 22 through November 12.

Merrick is the son of Walker and Christi Brooks and will be a freshman at Eastland High this fall. He has an older sister Destiny, an EHS senior and younger brother Weston, a fifth grader.
