Commerce and Daugherty Street Paving Planned

05/01/2009 - “If all goes well, on May 11, we plan to begin paving the four blocks of West Commerce and South Daugherty streets torn up by the King Kong Project”, said Bobby Jacoby, Eastland Public Works Director. Jacoby was referring to the 1000 and 1100 blocks of West Commerce and the 500 and 600 blocks of South Daugherty Street. The sewer lines in these streets have been replaced and the brick surface of Daugherty has been completely removed.

“Citizens along Daugherty are going to have to tolerate another few days of disruption before our paving begins”, added Richard Whittington of the City staff. “Atmos Energy plans to begin replacing gas lines in this same area, Monday, May 4. Doing this work before we pave the street will hopefully delay the need to disturb the street surface for a long time”, Whittington concluded.

Commerce Street will receive a chip seal surfacing from curb to curb. Since the mid section of the street was excavated for the sewer line replacement, there will probably be some uneven street settling continuing for the next several months. The two blocks of Daugherty Street will also be chip sealed curb to curb, but not on top of existing bricks or other hard surface. It too will undoubtedly settle unevenly in spots. Both sections will need additional seal coats applied next year to ensure as smooth a long lasting surface as is reasonably possible.

“We had hoped we could lay down a think asphalt street surface, at least on South Daugherty”, added Jacoby. “Our cost estimate to do so just proved too costly, so we need to go the best we can to get the chip seal laid down smoothly”, he said.

Jacoby also reminded everyone that King Kong’s major water line replacement program will begin within a few weeks and will have a major impact on traffic flow throughout much of town.

Bricks resulting from the Commerce and Daugherty street jobs can be purchased from the City of Eastland for $25 per hundred. Citizens can call City Hall at 629-8321 or drop by during business hours at 113 East Commerce for details.
