Abilene Reporter News Names Eastland QB "Player of the Week"

10/01/2009 - By Evan Ren
Abilene Reporter news

Jarred Moylan, QB, Sr., Eastland

— Entering the season as one of the top returning quarterbacks in the Big Country, Eastland’s Jarred Moylan was surrounded by question marks.

Most of EHS’ offensive line and skill personnel were new, as was its defense. So matching last season’s 2,390 passing yards and 6- 4 record was anything but assured.

Thus far, all of the problems associated with inexperience have contributed to a 2-3 start, but Moylan is still on pace to better his effort from last year. To date, the 6-foot-2 senior has thrown for more than 1,300 yards and 13 touchdowns this season, including 395 yards and six scores in a 66-23 win over Jim Ned on Friday to earn Big Country Player of the Week. “He’s strong and he’s got a good arm, but the (best) thing about Jarred is that he is so smart,” Eastland coach Brian Hulett said. “He’s a high-character kid and he’s a great leader, and those are the qualities which allow him to make the plays that he does.”

Moylan, who hit six different receivers with touchdown passes last week, also rushed 13 times for 143 yards and another score. And, believe it or not, he accomplished all of this before sitting out the entire fourth quarter.

“Some people tell their quarterbacks where to throw,” Hulett said.

“But if we’re in our normal passing game, we’re attempting to get five people in the route and he has free reign to make decisions.”

Big Country Top 10

* Tanner Welch, RB, Sr., De Leon
— Helped lead De Leon to a 50-26 win over Valley Mills, rushing for 181 yards and three scores on just eight carries.

Welch also had a total of 112 return yards, including an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and he caught a pass for 31 yards.

In total, Welch had 324 all-purpose yards and four TDs on just 11 touches — an average of 29 yards per touch.

* Monte Anderson, RB., Sr., Big Spring
— Rushed 27 times for 242 yards and four scores in the Steers’ 48- 0 win over Sweetwater on Friday.

Big Spring enters this week at 5- 0, and looks fully capable of winning District 4- 4A.

Big Country Player of the Week recognizes players outside the Abilene city limits who are within the newspaper’s circulation area. Players from Abilene High, Cooper, Wylie and ACHS are not eligible.

* Jonathan Williams, RB/CB, Jr., Goldthwaite
— Did a bit of everything in the Eagles’ 41- 0 win over Merkel, beginning with 114 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Williams also caught three passes for 74 yards and a touchdown, collected seven tackles (three solo), returned an interception 40 yards and recovered a fumble.

* Josh Arispe, QB/DE, Jr., Novice
— Had a hand in six touchdowns in Novice’s 64- 44 win over six-man Brookesmith, tallying 248 all-purpose yards in the process.

Arispe scored on runs of 4, 39 and 52 yards. He also caught touchdown passes of 50 and 78 yards, and returned a fumble 39 yards for a score.

* A. J. Keesee, QB, Jr., Ballinger
— Hit 22 of 38 throws in Friday’s 35-28 loss to Roscoe, piling up 401 yards and four touchdowns.

It was the third straight week that Keesee had thrown for more than 300 yards, which is reason enough to respect the Bearcats (2-3) as a threat in District 7-2A. Ballinger enters this week averaging nearly 30 points per game.

* Bonnie Peeks, OH, So., Graham volleyball
— In a pair of wins over Holliday and Breckenridge, Peeks had a combined 14 kills, three blocks, 30 digs and 26 serve receptions.

She had two pancake digs in the Holliday match, and posted a doubledouble of 15 digs and 10 kills in the Lady Blues’ district opener with Breckenridge.

One of the more versatile players in the Big Country, Peeks is on the court through all six of Graham’s rotations.

* Hayden Nauert, QB, Sr., Stamford
— Hit 15 of 22 pass attempts for 266 yards and three scores in a 40-16 rout of Windthorst.

Nauert, who has emerged as one of the area’s best small-school quarterbacks, also rushed eight times for 82 yards and another touchdown, as the Bulldogs improved to 4-1.

* Garrison Williams, QB, Sr., Roscoe
— Ran the Roscoe wishbone to perfection, charting 239 rushing yards and two scores on just 13 attempts in a 35-28 win over Ballinger.

In his spare time, Williams was perfect on PATs, hitting all five of his attempts.

* Tyler “Twig” Rodriguez, RB/CB, Sr., Haskell
— Aside from rushing for 118 yards and a score on 17 carries, Rodriguez also returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.

On the defensive side, Rodriguez picked off two passes from his corner spot, one of which stopped a potential Quanah scoring drive just before the end of the first half.

* Tanner Thompson, QB, Sr., Hawley
— Hit 12 of 22 passes for 291 yards and two TDs in Hawley’s 38- 0 win at Ranger on Friday.

Thompson also rushed eight times for 41 yards and another score to help the Bearcats improve to 23 on the year.
